"A more intentional tomorrow"

What if the next evolution in leadership is not another leadership style?
IT'S A SHIFT IN PERSPECTIVE
For generations, leadership research has focused on the individual leader-follower relationship.
Theory O Leadership expands the view—Seeing leadership as a collective , organizational system.
Individual Leader

Leadership as the actions and traits of one person.
Leader - Follower Relationship

Leadership as the dynamic between leaders and followers.
Collective Leadership Organization

Leadership as a coordinated, intentional, organizational system.

What Is Theory O Leadership?
Theory O Leadership is an organizational approach to leadership that positions leadership as a collective function of the organization - intentionally defined, developed, and reinforced to align people, behavior, and systems toward a common purpose.
It builds upon existing leadership research by expanding the unit of analysis from the individual leader to the leadership organization.
Leadership is most sustainable when it is designed into the organization, not dependent on the individual.
- Dr. JOHN ROBERT SPARKS

What Changes Through a Theory O Lens?
A SHIFT FROM INDIVIDUAL FOCUS TO ORGANIZATIONAL IMPACT.
Leadership Intent
From personal leadership style to an organization's intentional definition of leadership.
Collective Alignment
From isolated efforts to coordinated leadership across all levels and functions.
Organizational Reinforcement
From short-term influence to systems, structures, and processes that sustain leadership over time.
Accountability & Learning
From individual performance to organizational accountability and continuous learning.
Two Lenses. A Different Outcome.

Individual Leadership Lens
> Focus on the individual leader
> Success measured by personal influence
> Often dependent on specific people
> Limited organizational consistency
> Knowledge is lost when leaders leave

Theory O Leadership Lens
> Focus on the leadership organization
> Success measured by collective impact
> Built for continuity and sociability
> Designed for consistency across the organization
> Knowledge is captured, shared, and strengthened

From Doctoral Research to Theory O
Theory O Leadership is grounded in my 2022 doctoral research, which identified a knowledge gap in how organizations define, develop, and sustain leadership at the organizational level.
This research established the foundation for what I describe here as Theory O Leadership—an organizational approach that moves beyond individual behaviors toward an organizational perspective.

What Theory O is -
and Is Not
THEORY O IS:
An organizational approach to leadership
Built on scholarly research
Focused on collective leadership
Designed for practical application
A complement to existing leadership research
THEORY O IS NOT:
A new leadership style
A quick-fix model
A rejection of existing theories
A replacement for individual leadership
Limited to one industry or organization
ORGANIZATIONS TODAY FACE:
Increasing complexity
Greater need for alignment
Higher expectations for accountability
Demand for sustainable performance
A future that requires collective leadership
Why It Matters

Why the Name Theory O?
O = Organizational
In this concept, the "O" represents Organizational -
A deliberate focus on leadership at the organizational level.
Theory O Leadership, as presented by The Leadership Synthesis, specifically refers to the organizational approach to leadership articulated in my 2022 doctoral research.
A more connected
tomorrow is possible when leadership is designed for the whole
Let's Build a Stronger Tomorrow

A Note on the Term “Theory O”
The term Theory O has appeared previously in management and leadership literature. Beer and Nohria used Theory O to describe an approach to organizational change centered on building organizational capability and culture, while later research used the term in connection with leadership self-awareness, trust, and feedback. Theory O Leadership, as presented by The Leadership Synthesis, refers specifically to an organizational approach to leadership—shifting the unit of perspective from the individual leader toward leadership as a coordinated organizational function. This usage emerged from Dr. John Robert Sparks’ 2022 doctoral research, The Organizational Leadership Framework.
